Winged Figure (Strap-on Christ)
“The bird’s wing has never presented itself as a component within my work before, so I found this journey very interesting. I was sent male Mallard wings, which I have not used directly, but instead, have let influence my decisions on how I would incorporate the bird into my figures. The artist Leonard Baskin, the original ‘bird man’ provided me with the inspiration that would befit my mysterious, dark altered egos that feature in my work.”
The series of ‘Winged Figure’ started life from a drawing and makes
loose reference to the capture of Ganymede in the clutches of Zeus who transformed himself into an eagle-form. However, in this case Ganymede has been replaced by a Christ figure. The series also touches upon sexual identity intertwined with cultural identity with its own subtle dark humour.
