“I make narrative pictures concerned with my love of nature and the supernatural. Combining the two subjects, I work intuitively, creating charcoal drawings of figures at home in landscape settings.”
“Raised in rural Scotland, I would often play in woodlands nearby and in old derelict buildings. There is something otherworldly about the Scottish countryside, a certain atmosphere, found in the woods, fields and skies above. The smell of the earth and the sound of the birds bring on a feeling of contentment. After spending several years living abroad I could never escape a sense of longing to return.”
“I have made several drawings incorporating feathers, such as a cape or head piece to symbolise the desire to escape or feel connected to the spiritual world. Through the process of drawing this possibility becomes more tangible. Due to the nature of working in charcoal and the absence of colour, images merge easily into each other, becoming blurred, soft, dreamlike and organic. The tone, light and markings create a particular mood and metaphysical space.”
