“From the smallest elements, to the greater depths of space, there are unseen patterns and systems that create what we see. The most mundane thing can be the result of the most extraordinary circumstance, we may learn the ways of the universe or forever be held by its mystery.”
On receiving my pheasant wings from The Wing Assignment, I was fascinated by the data-like quality of the patterns observed on very close inspection. The feather markings looked almost man made, ridged and basic in form; the exact opposite to the organic form of the wing when viewed as a whole. I reacted by creating my own pattern sequence; converting numbers I had generated by rolling a dice into the possitions of strands in my sculpture” The assignment resulted in the creation of two works – the sculpture itself and a print of the numbers used to inform the creation of the sculpture.
